Bravo. This book was well done. It covers a wide range of weapons in details that are easy to read and understand.. It is loaded with technical charts for people that may enjoy technobabble but the text is clear and to the point. Each topic is covered with enough information to do the job. the book is loaded with excellent quality photos and drawings. He covers the devolvement and use of each weapon carefully. The text is good size so it is also easy to read. I found the book a pleasure to read and understand. This book is good for the experience to novice learning Germany WW2 technology. It does not cover negative activities by the Nazi to make these weapons which is not any of the subjects of this book..

I recommend reading this book.

GERMANY'S SECRET WEAPONS OF WORLD WAR II, a 2013 Chartwell Books release, is a combination/reworking of two previously-published titles GERMANY'S SECRET WEAPONS OF WORLD WAR II, done by Ford in 2000, and David Porter's WORLD WAR II DATA BOOK; SECRET WEAPONS, published in 2010. Being unfamiliar with those titles, I can't comment on how much material was reused. However, depending on your background on the subject, the 2013 book may be a fairly good primer on the various weapons and designs Germany produced in WW II or too basic a summary.

Ford divides the topic into chapters on 'Jet Aircraft,' 'Rocket-Powered A/C,' 'Hybrid-Powered A/C,' 'Surface-to-Surface Missiles,' 'Artillery,' 'Tanks and Anti-Tank Weapons,' 'Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Weapons,' etc. The Jet chapter includes sections on the He178 and 280, Me262 (the lengthiest section), the Ar234, Ju287, He162, Ta183, Messerchmitt P.1101, etc. The text is a bit dry but comprehensive.

As with other parts of the book, the Jet chapter is backed up with a wealth of illustrations - vintage photographs, 23 color side profiles, charts on Luftwaffe/Allied jet fighters compared, Me262 variants, Luftwaffe jet aces, Luftwaffe jet bomber payloads compared, etc. Yet, curiously, that same chapter has a section on the piston-engined Do335 and on German piston-engined bombers like the He177; what gives? (FYI many of the illustrations have been recycled from other Chartwell/Amber Books releases).

Likewise, the Tanks/A-T chapter includes info/illustrations on the Maus, Panzerfaust, Panzerschreck, tapered-bore gun, squeeze-bore gun, Ruhrstahl X-7, the Tiger tank, etc.

As a final example, the Artilley chapter opens with the WWI Paris Gun and Big Bertha gun then segues into the WWII heavy-hitters like Gustav/Karl/Dora, the K5 Anzio Annie gun, the K12 Cross-Channel Gun, high-pressure pump gun, P1500 Monster, etc.

I don't know if I'm being obtuse here but can the Me262, Ar234, Tiger tank and Gustav/Karl/Dora be lumped into the 'secret weapons' category when they all saw, sometimes heavy, oprerational use???

In any case, if you are interested in a basic, well-illustrated primer on Third Reich weapons development, Ford's book is worth a look especially since you can get a copy off the local B&N Remainders table for $12.98. Recommended.
The word 'Secret' in the title is a misleading piece of marketing hype. Very little described here is 'secret', but most of it was 'advanced'.

Nonetheless, Ford has assembled a very interesting and useful data base (numerical and descriptive) on the development and deployment of a lot of very smart Nazi weaponry. The book does over-reach itself with needlessly elaborated graphics, where a single figure would have sufficed. On the other hand, the line illustrations are of a high quality and the photos are good choices.

The book is not without its contradictions, starting with a statement in the Introduction "In a very real sense, Hitler himself motivated and ran the German secret weapons programme. There seems to be a direct and very tangible link between this programme and his psyche, and we are perhaps left wondering whether the Wunderwaffen would have existed without him". Fine. The text is then sprinkled with a variety of declarations (politically trendy caveats one imagines) describing Hitler's influence as 'meddling', 'wrong-headed' and 'flawed'. One can only imagine this is to dampen giving too much politically incorrect credit.

Unfortunately the hoary canard that the development of the advanced Tiger series of tanks was a wasteful mistake makes its appearance in this book. This oft repeated judgement (based presumably on financial cost alone), is that Germany would have been better served by producing masses of lesser models such as Panthers etc. How Germany could have done this given its crippling shortage of materials, manpower and fuel is not explained here either?

To his credit, Ford sensibly leaves true 'secret' off-the-board technology and research to more speculative writers.

Overall, this is at the minimum an excellent introductory compilation on the subject, with a quality printing and binding.
Interesting reading with some technical detail,
Interesting !!!
The book covers a huge array of weapons – from rocket-powered airplanes, submarines and missiles to anti-tank guns – that fall within the author’s definition of “secret”. Most of them are thus described superficially.

Photos and illustrations are in general of good quality. Maps, though, have no scale bar. The graphs often used to compare different weapons are sometimes good and sometimes terrible. The author would benefit a lot from reading “The Visual Display of Quantitative Information”.

If you want an overview of the subject, this is a honest option.
