This is Nicholas Monsarrat’s final masterpiece, an epic tale of the sea and seafaring from the sixteenth century to near the end of the twentieth.

Told from the point of view of Mathew Lawe, a young Devon sailor who is cursed after a spectacular act of cowardice to wander ‘the wild waters till all the seas run dry’, it is historical fiction but beset by real events. Monsarrat follows the great captains and naval adventurers from the Artic to the South Pacific. Lawe represents the spirit of maritime exploration and fortitude; his life is the thread stringing together a long history of nautical adventure.

He finds himself mixed up with Drake and the Armada; sailing with Hudson in search of the North-West passage; a buccaneer under Sir Henry Morgan in the Caribbean; assisting Samuel Pepys with his responsibilities as Secretary to the Navy; at the side of Captain Cook as he transports General Wolf to the storming of Quebec, and then on to his death in the Pacific; serving in Nelson’s household and then to the Nile, Naples and Trafalgar; working on a slaver from Liverpool to the Caribbean; press-ganged aboard the Shannon just before her duel with the American Chesapeake, exploring the Artic with Sir John Franklin; fighting in both world wars, including the action at Zebrugge and ‘D’ Day; before a final test with a tanker catching fire after the opening of the St.Lawrence Seaway – and much more besides!

Under sail and steam, as Mathew’s eternal existence progresses, the action-packed novel is both highly entertaining and instructive and has been widely acclaimed as a masterpiece. Some fourteen true maps, along with other diagrams, are included, and what was originally two volumes is supplied as one.

‘… this huge, action packed volume can be recommended to anyone’ – Sunday Times

‘He has never written anything to compare with this work – it is a masterstroke’ – Manchester Evening News

‘No one can bring alive the cruel sea and the valiant men who have sailed on it through all the generations like Monsarrat’ – Daily Mail

‘This is Monsarrat, master storyteller, running proud’ – The Scotsman

Note Nicholas Monsarrat died before Book II was finished. Anne Monsarrat completed the remainder of the story in Nicholas's own words, partly from some working notes he left and partly from his original synopsis of The Master Mariner Book II. Both are included here.

The Master Mariner Both Volumes I II edition by Nicholas Monsarrat Literature Fiction eBooks

Nicholas Monsarrat wrote some fine stuff. His "The Cruel Sea" is rightfully considered a classic tale of the North Atlantic WWII anti submarine service. The Master Mariner was his attempt at a long historical epic, following a character from the time of Drake and the Spanish Aramda up to the modern era. Monsarrat was unable to finish the second volume and what we have is something of a mess. But he does get the details of sea life absolutely right. If you have read and enjoyed "The Cruel Sea", try this; it's interesting but not great.

The Master Mariner Both Volumes I II edition by Nicholas Monsarrat Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Far from being as readable as the Cruel Sea, It has some good moments but can get very slow
Wonderful concept that does not disappoint, from the master wordsmith; Nicholas Monsarrat. For lovers of naval history, or just a very well written story, this is a must. Why are there no writers of this caliber, 14 years into the 21st century?
an excellent premise for a tale that travels through the centuries....have the principal cursed with living until a cowardly incident can be rectified...Monsarrat's knowledge of the sea and its vessels is staggering, and yet he puts it across in a way that any novice can understand...and the historical part of the story is accurate, which makes it even more interesting.
The Master Mariner is a great read, particularly the first volume. The second compiled from the working notes of the author does not go into the same depth as the former volume, however finalises a story that is well worth reading.
A classic for all readers of nautical history. Monsarrat really brought alive the times and the hardships that sailors faced and turned it into wonderful fiction. His main character, Matthew Lawe, has been portrayed as a person with a kind heart but has many flaws which affect us all. Could we brave in the face of danger, as Lawe finds himself throughout the story? Wonderfully crafted story well worth the reading.
I chose the five-star rating because it reflects exactly how I felt, and still feel, about this book. I came across it almost by accident, hadn't known of its existence, though a longtime admirer of Monsarratt's sea writing. The idea of the book's main character is a daring one, and placed enormous demands on its deviser/writer. I read the entire book from page 1 to the end, never less than fascinated by the vast historical sweep, the detail, the language, the imagination. What a sadness that Monsarratt didn't live to complete it! But it's a wonderful book, and I have already recommended it to a senior serving naval officer who, like me, had never heard of it. Yes, the end of the book is incomplete, but the anticlimax is small compared with the magnificence of the story that covers so many centuries, and so many characters who have shaped naval history. As Montsarratt might have said, "Huzzah!"
I have read this book a few times now. This review refers to the version, and I have to say that my reading experience on the has been just as good as the paperback book. This is the reason I bought a in the first place. There are diagrams to view, but they are of less importance, and they can be enlarged for study.

As for the book itself, it is of course, unfinished. I very much enjoyed the progression through history. The premise is naturally absurd. A mariner is cursed with wandering the world eternally in penance for failing Drake. That said, it works very well, and the device allows Monsarrat to take you on a historical review of maritime Britain in a unique and compelling manner. It works very well, until you reach the part where the author passed away, and you are left at the end with some notes toindicate what the direction might have been. That is not a problem. It leaves you with a feeling of regret to have missed out on the final chapters. If you can bear that thought, then do read this classic tale. Use the - it is lighter.
