Mechanicals, Mayhem, and Murder. All Sensibility Grey wants is to tinker in her new laboratory in boomtown San Francisco. A stranger in a strange land, she is finally making a life for herself as a purveyor of mechanicals to eager miners. But a pair of government agents have other things in mind. While loves and loyalties fracture, mysterious forces threaten to destroy Sensibility and her clockwork secrets. Tangling with occultists, aether gone wrong, and a local vigilante group, Sensibility must decide where her allegiances lie, and whom she can trust. OF MICE AND MECHANICALS is book two in the Sensibility Grey series of pre-steampunk, paranormal suspense set in the wild west of the California gold rush.

Of Mice and Mechanicals A Steampunk Novel of Suspense Sensibility Grey Volume 2 Kirsten Weiss 9780990886433 Books

This is FUN from start to finish! Kirsten Weiss has melded magic, mystery & steampunk fun into a wacky and unlikely romp through San Francisco during the gold rush. She manages to keep the characters real and realistic, in the midst of a series of crazy misadventures. I was particularly fond of the proto-feminist, inventor, Sensibility, and her best friend/shadow Jane —a lady government agent. When the dashing gentlemen are added to the mix, the women do NOT work against one another in a departure from the usual romance set ups. Instead, each well-drawn character carries his or her own weight through the adventure—including the host of nasty evil doers. Loved the seance scene and the descriptions of Sensibility's "domestic" inventions. The conceit that her tinkered creations cannot be replicated by other scientists lends credibility to the role of magic in the story—and in the world!

Of Mice and Mechanicals A Steampunk Novel of Suspense Sensibility Grey Volume 2 Kirsten Weiss 9780990886433 Books Reviews

A good book. Peters out a bit at the end. A good read even if it feels a little unfinished.
Great story. Lots of twist and turns, I always love that. The characters were good, I do wish she could have developed them a little more. I wanted to know more about Sensibility, I wanted to know her real emotions and feelings. I felt they got a little washed over. The same goes for Miss Algrave and Mr. Night. That is as close to negative as I can get on this book. It was a good read, and I would recommend it to other readers.
Fun steam punk romp.
I loved both books of this series. When will you write the next one? They made me lose sleep because I wait to see what happens next. Next one please. Who needs sleep.
I enjoyed the first book but one can usually judge an author's staying power by the second. This story absolutely did not disappoint. I shall be adding miss Weiss to my list of author's to watch. Very well done.
Great story and mostly well-written. It has all the elements you want in a steampunk story and even a bit of metaphysics which I found particularly pleasing.
I would have given it 5 stars except that the author started far too many sentences with participles ending in 'ing'. Though they're all grammatically correct, it's a cumbersome construction and something a good line editor wouldn't pass. One every 10,000 words or so is about what any prose can handle without it starting to feel a bit repetitive, and it only really works when the two parts of the sentence are happening at the same time; for example "Smothering a laugh, she watched ... "That works. Unfortunately, however, there were very few instances of this construction that didn't jerk me out of the story. One example of how awkward this kind of construction can be is "Lighting a lamp, Jane drew the blue-velvet curtain." She can't light a lamp and draw a curtain at the same time. It would be a simple matter for the author to go through and weed out these constructions if she wanted to improve this book, and if she did so, I would happily revise my review.
The copy editing is clean though, the story well structured and the characters endearing and well drawn.
If the participle at the start of sentences overuse doesn't drive you crazy and you like steampunk, then you'll enjoy this.
I'd like to read more from the author, but the participle thing makes me cautious. I hope the next in this series won't have the same fault.
I gave book 1 in this series three stars, but I've gone up a star because I believe the series is getting better. I have now read all three books and look forward to reading another if the author continues the series. The steampunk elements are good, and the characters are interesting. Plot twists keep you trying to figure it out and the setting in the old West works for me.
